They’ll take over leadership of various projects and programming currently ran by the DDA. “One of the big things a couple months ago we learned when we were doing training was that a lot of people want to create something new as a committee,” said DDA Director Justin Knepper. “There are different ideas that float around, that by having a strong committee we can build and grow them.” The committees will help streamline and maximize the effectiveness of the DDA. It could allow more resources to be allocated to create new events or return fan favorites from yesteryear that fizzled out over time. “Main Street’s whole point is that we shouldn’t be leading downtown’s direction from a staff standpoint. It needs to be lead from a community standpoint,” reemphasized the DDA director. He further continued to explain, “So if there are 20 people that say, ‘hey, these five things we’re doing are great, but we’re going a new direction now,’ and if the board agrees with that, then that’s the direction we’re going.” For example, promotion includes the Parade of Lights and Outhouse Races; economic vitality includes the DDA’s façade grant program and sign program; organization consists of a downtown newsletter or customer service training; and design includes things such as the mural program or city-wide clean up.

The City's Public Works and Engineering Services Department would like to inform residents that the last drop-off day of the year at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot (HHW) will be October 28, 2017. The facility will reopen in the Spring 2018. Residents are encouraged to bring acceptable household hazardous waste items to the HHW located at 402 Fifth Line East (City Landfill). Items such as paint, varnishes, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, motor oil, antifreeze, propane cylinders, electronics and clean packaging Styrofoam are accepted. All services provided by the HHW are FREE of charge to Algoma District residents with no gate fee required.
